“And those bastards down there are out to stop them,” Harry said, his grip tightening

on the controls. “What’ll we do, Sarge?”

Jack watched as two men who’d been riding in the back of the truck started preparing the rocket launcher for firing.

“Time to let them know they don’t exactly have it all their way,” Jack replied. “Take her down, Harry. We’ll give them a warning burst. See if that puts them off their stride a bit.”

Harry took the ‘copter lower, circling the armed vehicle then firing a burst from the

chopper’s guns, kicking up the sand in front of the truck. Obviously taken by surprise, the truck veered off the road, skidding and bumping over the loose sand for several yards before the driver regained control.

“They’re returning fire!” Paddy yelled as the two men raised what looked like Uzis and took aim at the helicopter.

“Bugger that,” Jack muttered, sliding the ‘copter door open and levelling his AK47 at the truck. The men on the truck dove for cover as the bullets from his gun peppered the side of the vehicle. Then one of them, hiding behind the rocket launcher itself, cranked the mechanism, turning the launcher to take aim at the helicopter.

“Shit,” Jack hissed, getting the top of the man’s head in his sights. There was no time for

him to weigh the rights and wrongs of this situation. The men below were out to kill innocent civilians, and Jack and his crew along with them if he didn’t stop it now. Hang the consequences. He squeezed off another shot, and grunted as the man was slammed backwards off the side of the truck. The other man tried to take over but was hampered as the truck bucked and shuddered over the rough ground trying to get back on the road.

“Circle back round again, Harry,” he yelled. “Try shooting out the tyres.” “Roger that…”

By this time the people on board the transports were aware of the conflict going on behind them. The trucks came to a halt and the passengers jumped out onto the road to watch.“Not what we want them to do,” Jack said grimly. “If those blighters manage to launch a rocket it’ll be a right bloody mess.” The truck picked up speed as it lurched back onto the road and headed for the convoy of would-be voters. “Harry, bring us around and get those tyres, now!”
